“Encounter at around 5:30 AM between the troops (from) 47IB and NPA resulted (in) 5 dead from NPA and 1 wounded from the army,” First Lieutenant Elma Grace Remonde, spokesperson for 47th Infantry Battalion in Bohol, said in a text message to CNN Philippines.
Remonde said 54 families from 42 houses were evacuated during the firefight, which lasted for about two hours.
The Central Command Public Affairs office in Cebu City also confirmed the encounter. It has yet to issue a statement on the details of the incident.
The army said the clash erupted after troops on patrol in the area encountered around 11 armed men.
Troops seized firearms from the suspected NPA rebels after the clash ended, the army added.
A clearing operation is being conducted by members of Philippine Armys 47th Infantry Battalion (Katapatan Battalion) to ensure the place is safe and families can go back to their homes, officials said.
